CTH in Nigeria: Is the “African Giant” ready to develop its hospitality sector?

In June, CTH Marketing Manager Tomi Popoola visited Lagos, Nigeria. While there, he was able to connect with key stakeholders and gain insight into the developing hospitality and tourism sectors. In this article, we look back on his trip and explore what he discovered.
CTH is not new to Nigeria. In fact, we currently have two existing CTH Teaching Centres in Aeroland Aviation Associations (Lagos) and Skyline University (Kano). However, as Nigeria makes progressive moves to build its hospitality and tourism sectors, education must be part of the foundation to this development, and that is where CTH comes in.
Along with its northern neighbours Morocco and Egypt, Nigeria's hospitality sector is set to experience significant growth. Earlier this year, W Hospitality Group Managing Director, Trevor Ward, forecasted continued international investment in Africa from the "Big 5" (Accor, Hilton, IHG, Marriott International and Radisson Hotel Group). Although, the Big 5 are set to extend their footprint across Africa, for a number of reasons, including the volatility of the Nigerian currency (Naira), growth has been inconsistent in Nigeria. Nonetheless, growth will happen and deals will be finalised; however, as well as investing in infrastructure, there must be investment in people.
At CTH, we know the importance of education at all levels. Our work internationally has given us experience in assisting countries and regions at different stages of their progression. For example, this year we have been working closely with our partners in Guyana. Using the CTH Hospitality Practice and Culinary programmes, the Guyanese government plan to bolster the hospitality and tourism sectors with upskilled Guyanese citizens, who can perform at an international level. A similar approach is needed in Nigeria, in order to standardise the staff quality level across the industry. This process must come from the top down.
This process must come from the top down, but essentially:
- CTH Hospitality skills like Restaurant & Bar Service, Front Office, Housekeeping and Concierge can be taught fairly quickly for practical-focussed Nigerian learners.
- CTH Hospitality and Tourism Management qualifications from L3 to L7 can be taught to more academic learners.
- Our Professional Development programmes are ideal for Nigerian staff already working in hotels, but who do not hold any formal qualifications. This will improve immeasurably their ability to progress into leadership and management roles.
Reflecting on his trip, Tomi said:
Visiting Lagos was very insightful. During my trip, I was able to engage with key stakeholders and experience Nigerian hospitality firsthand. There are a lot of great projects happening in Lagos and throughout the country.
During my visit, I travelled to Lagos Business School where I was hosted by Dr Belinda Nwosu. Dr Belinda is spearheading the LBS Hospitality Initiative which aims to train and elevate executive-level hospitality talent. I also visited leading culinary school Red Dish Chronicles who train young and independent learners with aspirations to become professional chefs. Lastly, I visited the University of Lagos Business School (ULBS). At ULBS, I had a great conversation about the potential for practical hospitality qualifications and progression for bachelor's and master's degrees in Hotel Management.
All in all, there are good things happening in Nigeria's hospitality sector, with ambitious people at the forefront of this. However, they need support, they need backing and they need greater exposure. At the moment, projects are very piecemeal. There is a real need for standardised training that enforces international standards. This must be enforced from the top down, from the Ministry of Tourism and industry leaders. The industry must be willing to invest in its people and create international partnerships in order to progress to the next level.
There is certainly a lot of work to do; however, there is great optimism for Nigeria. As the new generation continue to show their eagerness to learn and utilise the opportunities available, companies such as CTH will remain on hand to support. Watch this space.
